Having always been a country girl, I appreciate all things great and small in my life and environment. I strive to reflect overlooked objects and little things in day-to-day life in my artwork. I hope that my work will instill an appreciation for the beauty found in the simple things that surround us all in our every day lives.Marsha Chandler, NWS, SWS, GWS, WSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13806021151093659425noreply@blogger.comBlogger21125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7937074222579935303.post-8074129838899032592016-04-27T22:34:00.001-04:002016-04-27T22:34:14.058-04:00Vegetable Medley On It's Way to New OrleansI learned a valuable lesson this week that I want to share with you. My painting 'Vegetable Medley' was juried into the Louisiana Watercolor Society Exhibition in New Orleans and it's time to ship it. It is on a full sheet of watercolor paper, 30 x 22, has a 3 1/2 inch mat and a 2 1/2 inch frame. making it 42 x 34. Therefore, it is to big for my 42 x 35 box. Not only was I going to have to buy a bigger box it was going to cost $140-150 to ship it one-way and I have to pay for return shipping too. The 42 x 35 box shipping rate is only $45. Now that's a huge difference!
I had just about decided to not send it and take the penalty of not being in the show for 2 more years. Then I started thinking of getting a smaller frame but it's a custom size so no time for that. Then it dawned on me that I had a metal frame that I had taken off a painting because it had a dent in it. And then I thought "was that painting by any chance 'Vegetable Medley'?" I went to my storage room and brought it home and viola`it fits!! I think it's 1 1/4" wide. Now the painting will fit in my 42 x 35 box and only cost $45 to ship! I'm soooo excited!
The moral of this story is 'check to see how much it will cost to ship a painting before you put a wide mat and frame on it'. Just a few inches difference almost cost me $200. Ummmm! Now what art supplies can I buy with that money! Now I will have a chance to win an award too!

I was thinking of different types of drinks but lots of people paint those. So I thought why not put slices of fruit in martini glasses and viola! I love using the text fabric in my paintings because it adds a French flair and a linear design.

"Good to the Core" is a painting that I started in July 2013 after attending Chris Krupinski's workshop. I had it almost finished and then quit working on it because I was a little disappointed in it. But I finally finished it a few weeks ago and then entered it in a competition. I found out yesterday that it was juried into the American Women Artists 17th Annual National Juried Competition at the Addison Art Gallery in Orleans, MA on Cape Cod. I was shocked because I also entered the cherry painting and thought if anything was accepted it would be the cherries. Just goes to show that you just never know! I thought you would enjoy seeing some of the stages. Again, some are missing because I forgot to take a picture every time I painted. I hope you enjoy them.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCWZfcqgiFP4KXXefg20Dt6MozWb-41-PCKowhTZVMKr41Q1T1Sct4iDUJ-LKN_dQe7Pfx6CaNg3aJWRBYzPW6X6ot_14chU-32mzo-ShFjikXpgLy5iBh6U_VyqhoQqPQoQ9TPgwjcM8/s1600/IMG_0175.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; This is one of my latest paintings. I was able to capture the interplay between realistic image and it's naturally occurring abstractions making it very intriguing. It was pretty though! I got stranded with my 7 month old Grandbaby and had to leave my car but luckily a relative of sorts was behind me in a four wheel drive so she took us to my daughter and we made it safely to her house.
I've had 'Too Hot to Handle'finished for quite awhile but I wasn't quite satisfied with it so I made some changes. I put more folds in the cloth therefore changing the design on the cloth and changed the background to more blue than black. I like it better but what's your opinion. This is the second blog with the stages but I wanted to post them again with the final version. I've entered it and 'Keen on Jelly Beans' in the Transparent Watercolor Society Exhibition so I'm anxiously waiting to see if one of them gets in. This is my first time enter the TWSA. I hope you enjoy the different stages of 'Too Hot to Handle". Some of the pictures were taken with my phone and the lighting is different in them.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiRwJyT0jfP3z1viwINOt1FPDm9F-KesUV_VNvEeAoLsaa4FLmvzgjWtJ2MY5TrPgo8DGCBB9VvTbYOT4WMmG5w3T8CVhQBeVouJnOkqDBk9gWr4saHaT74ujJf3U3uRJ4hwiZOiWZhDg/s1600/12356.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; 'Keen on Jelly Beans' 22" x 25"i>
Here it is already the middle of January and I'm just now writing a new blog. I don't know what I have to do to be consistent doing this. I think it's because ALL I want to do is paint but I know if I want to succeed I have to do much more than that. Surprise News! I will be having a workshop at The Art Loft in Dahlongea in August! Details have not been finalized so I will let you know those as soon as they are. I am so excited about it!!
I have several new paintings that are finished or almost finished. These are some I've been working on for quite some time. I've put them aside waiting for new ideas to pop in my head and now I'm getting them finished so I can paint more new ones. Is this too many images to see at once. Maybe I should start posting images as I'm working on the painting so I won't have so many in one blog.
I quit working on this one because I couldn't decide what color to make the jelly bean on top. I finally just made it disappear. It's fun to be a magician! Hope you enjoy seeing this painting as it progresses!
Stay tuned! I will post another one in a few days!
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG6fvcaRTwL-mnxJftE91Q2oyEKmYA1S3wDX9CvqTNrkI9QpDYweNjTwmaoQ9SDeVGcr-kOO_pPlhXWCV7i7CL6n9zYft674rv7W-Zpdm_WEgB85VRUDr9G0_qhWRcxfWX0mwUhzNS1-M/s1600/1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I've made an early New Year's resolution, that I will post on my blog at least once a week so here I am again. I've been creating a painting for a Christmas card for the past 6 years and I just started this year's yesterday.I always wait until the last minute. Every year I say that I will get it done early but I never do. Time just seems to slip away. Maybe next year. The attached painting is the very first one that I painted and I was doing landscapes then.
Here is a little information on how my creative process in case you ever wondered how I come up with my paintings. I love to paint reflections and shiny things and I love vintage. I also like to feel challenged which is a detriment when I need to get a painting finished in a hurry. For my Christmas painting, I decided I wanted to paint candy since my other candy paintings have been so popular. I spent most of a day looking for vintage candy and containers and then another day taking lots and lots of pictures from different angles and perspectives while changing the placement of the objects. After downloading the pictures, I study them for hours. There just doesn't seem to be a fast way for me to paint in my style or at least I haven't found it. But still life painting is my absolute favorite thing.

I hope I can continue it this time. I just can't seem to find time for everything. After I won Daniel Smith's 12th Customer Art Contest for September, I promised Deborah Burns who writes the blog for Daniel Smith that I would write my blog again. Everyone keeps telling me that it is more important than a website, Facebook or Linked In so I will diligently try to keep it up.

For those who missed the Daniel Smith Blog, you can read it at
http://www.danielsmithblog.com/marsha-chandler-12th-annual-daniel-smith-customer-art-contest-monthly-winner-for-september-2013/ By the way, I won a $100 gift certificate that I spent on new brushes and paints. The brushes are Silver Brushes (Black Velvet) that Soon Warren recommends and I can't wait to get them. I'll let you know if I like them. My old ones are in terrible shape and I can't get a smooth line with any of them. I will also have a 1 in 12 chance of winning a $1500, $1000, $500 or $250 gift certificate. This is the link to the contest. Who knows, you might be the next winner. https://www.facebook.com/DanielSmithArtSupplies/app_451684954848385

I've just returned from trips to three amazing shows for which I am so grateful to be a part. The first show was the International Guild of Realism 8th Juried Exhibition held at the Tempe Center for the Arts in Tempe, AZ. The center is an architectural marvel and it was such a thrill to be in an art show in such a beautiful venue. We had a day of very informative seminars and a VIP reception on Friday, October, 5 and a public reception on Saturday, October 6. It was truly an informative and eventful weekend. IGOR knows how to host an art show! This is a link to the paintings that are in the show http://www.tempe.gov/modules/showdocument.aspx?documentid=19588

If you paint realism, you should check out IGOR. It really is a great orginazation with a juried membership. Their website is http://www.realismguild.com. The tentative location of the 2014 show is the Robert Lange Studio Gallery in Charleston, SC.

Tempe is only a few miles from Scottsdale so we were able to visit the galleries there. They have many realism galleries so I really enjoyed seeing them. However, there were very few watercolor paintings. When will people realize that Watercolor Paintings are Fine Art but that's for another blog. Thank you for reading.
I did start a new painting during his recovery and thought you might enjoy seeing it's progress. I forgot to make a picture the 2nd day I worked on it so the 2nd picture is the 3rd days progress. This is my first attempt at painting plastic and I'm really enjoying the challenge.

I keep asking myself what can I say that would interest people. So I've been reading other artist's blogs and mostly they seem to be written like one would talk to their friend. Nothing profound, just ordinary, day to day stuff in the every day life of an artist. I'm going to try this and see how it works. Maybe the more I blog, the more I will think of to say, hopefully.
I recently read a post in Fine Art Views Newsletter by Donald Fox that seemed to give me permission to write my blog any way I choose. These few sentences by Donald Fox seemed to say just what I needed to hear. "Well, why not just write? You don’t have to make the blog be a certain way. What
you feel or think on one day may not be the same another day. As human beings,
we’re allowed to have opinions and change our minds on occasion. So what if
sometimes there are conflicting thoughts or slightly disorganized ones? With all
the challenges we have to face every single day, all the decisions we have to
make, isn’t there room for a bit of inconsistency?"

"The blogger can present his or her thoughts in whatever way he/she chooses.
Since the writing is being published to the web, however, there is an intended
audience, and writing for an audience should require somewhat organized thinking
on the part of the writer. Still, this isn’t formal writing, and no blood,
sweat, or tears, are required."
Go to http://donaldfoxfineart.com/blog/48300/not-about-art-or-is-it to read the rest of Donald Fox's blog.

Stay tuned for more and better blogs! Hope you are having a great week!
VEGETABLE MEDLEY

I have a tendency to stop working on a painting three-fourths through it. It just gets to a point when I start thinking that this is not going to be a successful painting. I need to listen to the little voice that was in my head in the beginning saying this is going to be a great painting and just keep painting. Several times I stopped on Vegetable Medley but I finally finished it. I'm happy with it now and just entered it in the Southern Watercolor Society Exhibition. Refer to prior posts to see the progress of this painting. My advice is that if you believe in a painting enough to start it then you should see it through to the finish. Some of my best paintings were ones that I thought just were not good part way through the process and stopped and finally finished!Marsha Chandler, NWS, SWS, GWS, WSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13806021151093659425noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7937074222579935303.post-20070027077901706212012-09-26T14:20:00.000-04:002012-09-26T14:20:40.595-04:00Show at the Alliance Theatre
I haven't been able to finish any new paintings because I've been on vacation and getting ready for my show at the Woodruff Arts Center in the Alliance Theatre Galleria sponsored by Digital Arts Studio. http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs068/1101603801014/archive/1111071152218.html. It begins tonight and I'm so excited about it! I hope to make a lot of sales but if not, make a lot of contacts. I set up yesterday so all I have to do tonight is show up. We will be meeting with people before and after the play and during intermission through Sunday night. The play is What I Learned in Paris but it'sa love story in Atlanta in 1973. Check it out at http://alliancetheatre.org/en/Our-Plays/Now-Playing/What-I-Learned-in-Paris.aspx. I will have originals and giclees available.
If you are going, be sure to look for me in the lobby. Wish me luck!
I hope you had a great weekend! The painting of the vegetables has progressed a little but I don't have a new photo yet. I'm not happy with it so I need to study it for a few days to figure out what I need to do next.

I'm posting a photo of a painting I started several months ago. I stopped working on it because I didn't like the vineyard view out of the window. Since this picture was taken, I've washed off most of the paint of the vineyard. Also I haven't put the writing on the bottle and glass. I keep wondering if I should try to make it generic looking instead of just Blackstock Winery, http://www.bsvw.com/,
where the original photo was taken. I thought of having an image made at Digital Arts Studio, http://www.digitalartsstudio.net, without the writing and then personalizing Giclees to the wine of one's choice. What are your thoughts on that?

If you haven't been to Blackstock Winery in Dahlongea, it is really beautiful there expecially in the fall. On Saturdays they have lunch and live music. There are two other wineries on the same road and several more in Dahlongea. Great relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff.

I've been thinking of my next series and am leaning toward Southern drinks, non-alcoholic like tea and lemonade and mimosas, margueritas, etc. Suggestions are appreciated!Marsha Chandler, NWS, SWS, GWS, WSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13806021151093659425noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7937074222579935303.post-65985092967445190672012-08-17T22:31:00.002-04:002012-08-17T22:31:32.874-04:00Progress of New Painting

I've been working really hard to finish this painting this week but not so sure that I will be able to. There are a few problems with it that I'm working on. The table is too dark now but I'm happy with the big shadow I think. is even though they are still there. I got the asparagus too dark so I'm working on lightning it. There's still some work to be done on the pot. I painted the top of the eggplant after I took this picture and it looks a lot better now. The top picture is the most recent and it was taken with my phone so the quality is not as good as the other one.Marsha Chandler, NWS, SWS, GWS, WSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13806021151093659425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7937074222579935303.post-86692079101494398732012-08-15T08:43:00.000-04:002012-08-15T08:48:53.438-04:00Progress of New Painting

My new painting is progressing slowly. I had hoped to have it finished by now but haven't succeeded. I'm not sure my shadow is dark enough or the right colors. Comments are appreciated. Shadows really give me a lot of trouble. I keep thinking I will master them someday. I added the table top on the corners and I'm thinking of adding it to the upper right corner too. What do you think? The glow in the silver hasn't popped yet so I'm anxious to start working on it again this morning.
Any suggestions for a name for the painting? I'm stumped. Also, I want to start or continue a series of paintings that reflect things of the South. My ideas so far are for a pitcher and glass of ice tea on a vintage cloth outside. Also, a lemonade one of the same. Any suggestions??

While painting yesterday, I got frustrated and finally just stopped. However, that was after 6 hours of painting so maybe it was time to stop. . It's cloudy and foggy today so it's a perfect day for me to paint. I love rainy days! So off to work I go, down through the muddy & cow paddie dotted pasture. Would you like to see pictures of my studio surrounded by pasture, cows and trees?Marsha Chandler, NWS, SWS, GWS, WSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13806021151093659425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7937074222579935303.post-87627259284199902152012-08-12T20:56:00.000-04:002012-08-12T20:57:33.445-04:00See New Painting in ProcessI've started another full sheet watercolor painting. Although they are much more expensive to frame, I really love painting this size. There are many collectors that prefer large paintings so maybe they will find my paintings irresistable! I'm really enjoying painting this so I hope it turns out well so that I can enter it in the next Southern Watercolor Society competition.
I have clear contact paper covering the area around the pan to keep it clean. It's easy to use. Just pull off backing and press on painting. Use an exacto knife to cut around area that you want to paint and leave other areas covered. I haven't thought of a name yet so suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Alas, my friend Cathy Hill has unwittingly come to my rescue. Her art is cooking, gourmet cooking no less. She has just started a blog called www.semiblonde.com. I know that title has nothing to do with food, but I suppose she thought it was fitting since she is 'semi-blonde'. Her July 4 post included the recipe for Spicy Sweet Corn Relish. (I know this doesn't relate to any of my paintings but I'm desperate!) She even got a little artsy in her serving choice! Check it out! She will be posting some recipes that relate to my paintings. That should be interesting!
I'm busy creating paintings for my upcoming show at Dogwood City Art Gallery. The opening reception is August 4, 7-9 PM. I will have 20 - 30 paintings hung. This is an exciting event for me! I've had several solo shows but this is the first time I have had a reception. Everyone is invited!Marsha Chandler, NWS, SWS, GWS, WSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13806021151093659425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7937074222579935303.post-16199962638326619652012-07-03T22:52:00.000-04:002012-07-03T22:52:15.941-04:00New BeginningsHeres to New Beginnings! Mike Nalley, a photographer friend of mine, came to my house and studio to take pictures of me for my website and a poster. Of course, this was made in my studio. I will publish some other pictures of my studio, but I have to clean it up just a little. If it's too clean, you can't get a good idea of how I work and who I am. Also, he made some pictures of me around the farm that I will publish.
Yes, I am a farm girl and have been almost all my life except in my 20's. Would you believe that I chopped, hoed and picked cotton in Boaz, Alabama until I moved away at 18? Also, we had an outdoor toilet until I was 8. We really did use a Sears Roebuck Catalog!! This was when my Daddy built us a new house and we finally had hot water and gas heat. Until then, the only heat we had was a fireplace located in the middle of an old drafty house. My summers were always spent working on the farm tending thousands of chickens and turkeys. I live on a farm now but we're it's about 5 minutes to the mall, interstate and Wal Mart.we only have a few cows and I do none of the work. That's all I can get on this blog. I am jumping on the 'blog' wagon and hope all of you will follow me. I'm an artist, not a writer so I hope I can find something interesting to say. I thought about throwing something in about my life on a farm but decided it had nothing to do with my art. But on second thought, it is a big part of who I am. I have lived on a farm almost my entire life. But now it is a gentleman's farm so to speak. We have a few cows and horses, but I don't do any of the work. Except, early one morning last week I looked out my bedroom window to see a cow peering in at me. Surprise! My husband was gone so it was up to me to get them back in the pasture which I did with no trouble at all. Glad I still remember how to do it!
My studio, a mobile office, has lots of windows and my view on all sides is nothing but trees and pasture. It is my sanctuary in the woods, the perfect place for me to paint with no disturbances.

Unless something interesting happens outside my window, my blog will be mostly about art. It may be a picture of the piece I'm working on or something interesting that I read. I will use it to keep everyone posted on my latest exhibitions. I look forward to hearing from you!Marsha Chandler, NWS, SWS, GWS, WSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13806021151093659425noreply@blogger.com0
